The Alhambra was designed to have a castle-fortress feel with reddish/golden colours in its walls. The purpose of this was to avoid bringing any unwanted attention from possible exterior threats whilst hiding the beauty of its interior. The Alhambra was originally designed as a military zone but then became the royal residence for Granada in the mid-13th century after the establishment of the Nasrid Kingdom and the construction of the first palace by King Mohammed Ben Nasr, better known as Alhamar. The word “Alhambra” means “Red Castle” in Arabic but became a Christian court in 1492 when the Catholic Monarchs conquered Granada. Shortly after this several structures were built to house citizens, military and a number of churches were built.  La Alhambra is definitely a must see when visiting Andalucia !!!
